Archaeology at the service of a restoration project At first glance, the buildings surrounding the medieval church of the former abbey of Cistercian nuns of La Cambre mainly belong to the 18th century. Recent work campaigns on the eastern wing of the cloister have made it possible to understand the primitive medieval spaces of the cloister buildings of the abbey, both in plan and in elevation. During this visit around the cloister and in the church, we will take you back 800 years in time to discover - by means of archaeology - the still largely unknown remains of the medieval abbey of La Cambre. Interesting comparisons with its mother abbey, the Cistercian abbey of Villers-en-Brabant (Villers-la-Ville), lift a corner…

Prior to the restoration of the buildings and the site, Brussels archaeologists have been interested in the Priory of Rouge-Cloître for some thirty years. You will discover its medieval heritage through the many remains still present on the site. From the laying of the first stone of the church in 1381, to the reconstruction of its choir between 1511 and 1520, a monumental complex, endorsed by the Duchess Jeanne de Brabant, was built on this site on the edge of the Sonian forest. The recently restored Prior's House - the former eastern wing of the cloister that probably housed the scriptorium frequented by the painter Hugo van der Goes - is the highlight of this visit. Within its walls, the…

The Renommée/De Faem is a dwelling in the interior of a housing block, accessible from the Grand Place via a passageway between no. 14 and the Hard Rock Café (no. 12A). The dwelling has been archaeologically and historically documented since the late Middle Ages. At that time it formed a dwelling with at least two perpendicular wings, one of which had a cellar. This first construction, intended for residential use, was built into a block that was still open and not very well built. The situation changed radically after the bombing of 1695. The installation of a family of wholesale wine merchants (the Vander Meulens) at nos. 13-14, whose commercial activities required an increase in storage and sales space, resulted…
